As globalization becomes ever more the norm in business today, companies need a way to manage all of their information on a grand scale. Employee information, client data, accounting spreadsheets, transactional data, updates on inventory, hiring data and sales information are all typical things that companies track and use their database(s) for. Companies are using the latest in Database Management to keep all of this data secured, tracked and accounted for. However, this requires a good database structure behind it and a skilled individual or individuals to manage the data and make sure everything is up to date because old data is useless to everyone. Good Database Management comes down to four main points: Data Access, Data Relationships, Data Updates and Data Searches. What makes it possible to manage the many relationships between all this data that companies need to stay competitive is the relational database management system. Lets go over how the data is accessed, how data relates to one another, the importance of updates data and searching for data.
The modern relational database management system uses a programming language called SQL, or Structured Query Language, to access data. SQL allows DBA’s, Database Administrators, to access, update and delete data from within the database’s tables. Programs that include the open source MySQL and Microsoft’s SQL Server allow outside programs to access data via SQL queries. For example, your website can display a product or service that you want to sell and will include the data for that such as prices, descriptions and photos when the web server software connects to the data contained in your relational database.
One of the most integral parts of the relational database management system is how the data in different tables relates to one another. This allows the data to be better used and lets management or the administrator manage relationships between different aspects of a company efficiently. For example you can have employee data on your sales team be related to data on product sales and examine the relationship between the two. This relationship can help determine what salespersons are doing the best and what products are selling. The knowledge that is gained from this information being together in one place lets management have a better idea of how to steer the company and ensure it stays competitive.
By having this relational database management system, the company or user and can build and maintain an up to date system over said systems lifetime. Along with updating data you can delete outdated or irrelevant data from your tables. What your sales where from ten years ago might not matter to you because markets have changed and consumer attitudes are changing as well. Current records lead to better reports and having a more clear idea of what the future will look like for your company. This will hopefully allow you to have a competitive edge over your competitors and stay ahead.
Last but certainly not least, data searches. The various tables that you create and manage will allow your users or employees to search through a plethora of critical data, while being able to pinpoint what they want based on available criteria. Your customers will be able to search through products and can have the option to sort by brand, price, color or whatever else you deem important. The system stores your data in a predictable and sequential format that enables users to look through previous records as well.
